I have just installed lots of new themes on zungu.net. Thanks to WordPress.com most of the themes now have the option to upload your own header-image. Give it a try!

The zungu blogBASE runs on WPMU 1.3 now. I had some problems upgrading and have to further check the database. Some updates on themes and plugins coming as well.

Volxbibel - The German Open Source Bible

Volxbibel is a modern German bible translation initiated by Martin Dreyer. Version 1.0 was translated with focus on young people that have no idea of Christian faith and therefor uses modern youth slang. His Vision was to create a Bible that that continues to be updated by the people themselves - the volk. Volxbibel Verlag, a subsidiary of R. Brockhaus Verlag, published the Version 1.0 in 2005 and sold about 100.000 Bibles within about a year. R. Brockhaus is publisher of the Elberfelder Bible, which is well known as a very exact translation. Already before the first publication the publisher house and Martin Dreyer encountered strong protest from wide parts of protestant Christians in Germany, degrading Dreyers translation as blasphemy. Through the strong protests the project gained quite some media presence and popularity in the secular world.

One characteristic aspect of Volxbibel is, that it is published under a dual license, one of them the well known Creative Commons (BY-NC-SA). This license is extended by a special license, exclusively allowing the publishing house commercial use of the bible. Since publication of “the first open source bible in the world”, the translation continues as a process in a wiki - the Volxbibel Wiki*. Editing is open to every registered user who claims to support Volxbibel’s Vision. Since theVolxbibel-Wiki launch in August 2005 more than 500 users registered to the project. In March 2006 Version 2.0 of Volxbibel with lots of input from the Wikiusers was published.

The publishing process does not underlie fully democratic decision. The online content of Volxbibel is seen as draft version everybody can discuss and give input to. Before a new Version of Volxbibel is published a group of theologians around Martin Dreyer audit the changes and verify their correctness. In future Versions all edits and audits are supposed to happen in special spaces within the wiki, enabling simple monitoring of changes and automatic export for future printable releases.

* Volxbibel Wiki was put up by me (zungu - Corporate Wiki Consulting) and officially launched on 5th of August 2005. Volxbibel Wiki is powerd by MediaWiki, the same engine that drives the famous Wikipedia.

Signup Spam

Recently quite a number of spam-blogs have been registered on zungu.net. After I had closed down sign-up for some time I decided to try a signup-spam-plugin and hope that this will reduce unwanted sign-ups. So feel free to register your blog.

Update 1:

In order to further reduce signup-spam on wpmu I have installed WPMU Captcha Registration. When registering your first blog you have to enter the code shown on a captcha image. I really hate that, but I hope to reduce silly sign-ups of dumb spam-blogs.

Update 2:

The Captcha-Plugin seems to reduce spam, but still there are almost daily registrations. I’ve decided to password-protect signup. In case you want a blog, get in contact with me.

Hi Folks, zungu.NET is running the new Version1.0 of WPMU. The upgrade was smooth and I hope every things is fine. Widgets are up and running. Feel free to get yourself a blog. In case you want a special theme installed check out the themeviewer and send me your request. As soon as I have time I will give it a try and let you know if it works fine.

Wordpress Multiuser Version 1 RC1

Wordpress Multiuser just released the first realease candidate of Version 1. Donncha of the Wordpress.com developers prepared the downloads [tar.gz, zip]. WPMU users are encouraged to post their feedback and create trouble-tickes in case of problems.
WPMU, the software zungu.net runs on, enables to provide multiple blogs based on a single installation. I am very excited about that and will install the release asap. If the system runs smoothly, I will update zungu.NET of course.

how to deal with spam on zungu.NET

Spam is well known to most people when it comes to email. Sadly not only mailboxes are filled with spam, also weblogs get polluted with comment spam. Some special software called “spam-crawlers” publish comments on the posts. Sometimes the comment “Wow, what a great blog” seems to be from a friendly person that found your blog, but if you have a look at the links posted you’ll find some site offering credits, mortgages, casinos, drugs and so on.

Fight Spam in your blog.

The Blogs on zungu.NET have the Askimet-Plugin installed. (Actually all wordpress blogs come with that plugin). Once activated, it filteres all comments and catches most spam comments. So you’ll just have to check the spam-comments once in a while and delete them.

Activate the Plugin

Login to your weblog (e.g. via zungu.NET) and navigate to Plugins. Hit the “Activate”-Button of the Askimet Plugin on the right side. After that you will find a tab “Akismet Configuration” next to the open Plugins Tab.

Get a API-Key

In order to activate Askimet you will need a Wordpress.com API-Key. Signup on wordpress.com. You can choose the option “Just an username, please.” if you only need that API-Key. Doublecheck your emailadress, since the API-Key will be sent there. You will receive an email to activate your new Wordpress.com Username. After you have done that, a second email will contain the Key you need to activate Askimet.

Return to your own Admin-Area of your blog and open that new tab “Plugins/Askimet Configuration” mentioned above. Paste the Api-Key from your email in there and hit the update� button. Thats all, you’re done. You will find a new Tab “Askimet Spam” within the Manage-Section. All Spam will be collected there and you can delete it easily.

Sidebar Widgets Plugin released

The folks from wordpress.com have released thier Sidebar-Widgets to the public (wow, thank you!). The widgets come as a plugin and enable wordpress-users to configure their sidebar to their wishes, without touching the code. It will be easy to include or re-arrange recent comments, archives, blogroll, flickr …�

I will have a look a the plugin asap and try to include it here on zungu.net. The themes will have to be adapted to the change, so I’ll try to find some new themes that include it already and step by step change some of the current themes. In case you find some cool new themes let me know…
