Comment-Spam
Sooner or later your blog will be attacked by spammers trying to misuse the comment-function of WordPress. These are two steps to prevent Spam.
1. Moderate comments of unknown readers
Check your local settings in Options/Discussion tab in your WordPress administration-backend. Activate these settings (view sample screenshot):
Comment author must fill out name and e-mail
Comment author must have a previously approved comment
Comments from unknown (first time) commenters have to be moderated by you from then on. You will receive a mail and can activate the comments in your Comments/Awaiting Moderation tab.
2. Use Akismet to filter out Spam
Akismet is a free spamchecker for private use. You need two things to protect your blog with Akismet,
- an Akismet API-Key provided by Wordpress.com
- the activated Akismet Plugin
To get your API Key you have to signup at WordPress.com. You only need a username (tick “Just a username, please.”). Follow the given steps to register the account. You will find you API-Key on your WordPress.com profile page.
If you are done, return to your .zungu blog and open the Plugins tab. Activate Akismet Plugin (Screenshot - Activate your Plugin) and then enter your new API-Key (Screenshot - Enter your API-Key). You’re done. All comments will be checked by Aksimet. Check your spamfolder (Comments/Aksimet Spam)once in a while and delete the comments if you wish (Screenshot - Check and delete spamcomments).
